Beautiful book. I will say that I tried to read this aloud to my six year old and I literally couldn’t finish because I was crying so hard. So either read it through first or save for slightly older children who can read it on their own :-)
I was a third grader the first time this book came into my hands. The last moment when Pink asks to "touch the hand that touched the hand of Mr. Lincoln" has stayed with me ever since. This story is very touching and powerful.
In this Civil War story passed from great -grandfather to grandmother , to son , and finally to Patricia Polacco herself . Polacco once again
writes about shared humanity of the peoples of this world. Very touching and just love her books. She is a great writer and illustrator . The exert at the back of the book is also very enlightening of the truth and outcome of this sad but yet uplifting story .
Very powerful. I'm loving Patricia Polacco more and more lately.
This is a great picture book for anyone learning about the Civil War. It brought me to tears.
