Chapter 12, about 10 pages in, explains what happened in that tree when Phineas fell, and all that came after that. The last 4 pages wrap it up with Brinker's comments on war, and Gene's comment on that: "...wars were made instead by something ignorant in the human heart." The last page still is perplexing to me.
