An original musical portrait of American composer Cole Porter, filled with his unforgettable songs. Porter looks back on his life as if it were one of his spectacular stage shows, with the people and events of his life becoming the actors and actions onstage. A series of borrowed DVDs, CDs and my collection of Cole Porter songbooks that drove me to watch again this 2nd movie bio-flick of this great American composer, the first being Night and Day which I plan to watch next. It started with Kiss Me Kate just to liven up my Christmas holiday video marathon followed by a very disappointing CD tribute by Harry Connick. I have to listen to Janet Seidel's album which is think poses a stiff competition to the quintessential songbook to Porter - that of Ella Fitzgerald. (If not for the latter's rather goddess stature in the field of Jazz, I would really consider Seidel's album's the best of the tributes.)

Seeing De-Lovely for the 2nd time maybe after more than decade gave me a new perspective of the movie - it was actually an excellent movie. Maybe, I might be biased because of this sudden interest again with Porter's oeuvre but one must admit his songs has much musicality and the lyrics so rich. The inclusion of such popular and famous singers like Nathalie Cole, John Boorman, Robbie Williams, Diana Kraal added glamour to those musical numbers although not necessarily required. I guess it was more to put prestige to the film. Relatively unknowns could actually do even better specially from any struggling Broadway singers but again, Hollywood musicals being that need that "big names" to sound more big time. The latter part of the movie was basically the best part and I don;t mind watching again not necessarily after a decade. But the CDs will definitely keep on playing specially from that Australian chanteuse but who passed away in 2017 and of course, dear Ella and who knows, there are lots who continue to churn a tribute.

I greatly enjoyed this movie from start to finish and including all the special features
I liked the structure of the story and I especially liked the featured singers in Porter's life flash-back
I was familiar with some of his music but knew little of his life so this movie was very revealing
Liz Dong, a youtube contributor, has put together a playlist of the soundtrack

this was not your usual song-writer biopic and many critics were not impressed
but I vote with Roger Ebert who gave it 3.5/4

I like the DVD. I recommend it to all ages. It is not too sexual. There is no violence. The music was nice. It is emotional shallow. The biography was well done. It represents what people will do for love in their life.

Top-notch production - costumes, music, lavishness - sensitive biography of Cole and Linda Lee Porter. Wonderful entertainment.

This is the story of the life of composer Cole Porter. A little weak plot-wise, but gorgeous costumes and snappy musical numbers.

The story isn't anything great, but Kevin Kline does a masterful job of acting his "age" at the various points. The production is excellent and imaginative, seamlessly moving between the revue and the life.

Right off the boat: Incredible music score, and tall-tale telling of Cole Porter's life. Being ripped between many things at once is hard to bear, especially when love plays as a two-sided factor. For this movie, I give it (And this is the first movie to be graded like this by me) 4.5/5 stars! All in all,it's not Bad- it's De-Lovely!;)

Linda Porter: Your song was absolutely delirious.
Cole Porter: Thank you. I'm never quite sure if they get the joke, especially when it's on them.
Linda Porter: You should learn to trust your audience.
Cole Porter: I trust it. I just wish I could expand it.
