For three years during World War II, US submarines sailing from Brisbane were at the forefront of the war against Japan, but the story of this "Silent Service" is not well known, overshadowed as it was by the larger Pearl Harbor and Fremantle task forces. Jones and Nunan trace the subs' contribution to the Allied victory in the Pacific and also describe the job performed by the Royal Navy X craft, which exercised in Queensland waters after the US subs left and then sailed to a different kind of war off enemy harbors. Jones is also the author of The Whalers of Tangalooma (1980), and Nunan is a retired teacher who is honorary librarian of the Queensland Maritime Museum.
