Campion's screenplay is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Susanna Moore... Like the film/novel Looking for Mr. Goodbar (novel by American writer Judith Rossner/film starring Diane Keaton and Richard Gere,) a single school teacher courting danger when seeking relationship with men. An erotic crime drama with Meg Ryan, but far from the perky woman we saw in When Harry Met Sally (1989), Sleepless in Seattle (1993) or You've Got Mail (1998).

I liked this movie. Having said that, I found it quite a curious and dark movie shot in a trashy-type neighborhood. I think the characters did a good job displaying the type of people you might find living there. Keeping it real, it was a bit depressing. The murders seemed almost second place to the feelings of the characters. There was a bit of gratuitus sex that I think was needed for the development of the characters. I gave it an almost 4 rating.

Meg Ryan acting like she is high in real life not just in character and trying to prove she isn't just a "girl next door" type. Total failure in this role. Lots of sex scenes but not much else.

I actually saw this film twice, but not intentionally. The second time I was staying with a friend and he had rented it so I sat through it, which was not easy. Visually, it looks great. This is what NYC looks like. But the plot is turgid and weighed down by dime-store eroticism. There might be a triumphant feminist message here; if so, I missed it. Disappointing coming from a director whose films include THE PIANO, PORTRAIT OF A LADY, HOLY SMOKE! and the tremendous BRIGHT STAR. I suppose even an auteur such as Jane Campion can fire off a dud.

An alright murder mystery which is somewhat predictable.

18 quotes in IMDb, thanks to contributions. These two should be but not:

I mean, all women want love, right? What about you? You want love? Wanna be kissed? My guess is, you want it so bad it hurts.

(This one gives the film's title is more "obscene" than any others in mho:)

Yeah, I like it in the cut.
