This is so trite its surprising that it was even published. The list of qualities of entrepreneurs at the end seems - like many business books - just a grab-bag of good qualities, but which, upon just a moments reflection, is seen to be nonsense: entrepreneurs are said to be both focused and curious, purposeful and adaptive...and so on. They might as well be both hot and cold, above and below, black and white. Without a context for when the listed qualities are beneficial and when not, such a list is pointless.

If you’re looking for insights and wisdom that you can apply to your business situation, then the one minute entrepreneur is a great place to start. The authors Ken Blanchard, Don Hutson, and Ethan Willis use good old-fashioned storytelling to draw you into the narrative about one man’s struggle to create and grow his own business.

The story is fictional, but many of the characters offering advice are real people. It begins when Jud McCarley was in his senior year of high school and he almost made a blunder big enough to crush his dream of starting his own business. From there the story grows in complexity and he confronts problems that all entrepreneurs face as they strive to create and sustain a successful business.

The one minute entrepreneur still manages to focus on three essentials throughout the story. The first is managing money and understanding that “success depends on cash, cash, cash”. The second centers on empowering your people to take responsibility in your business so they become eager to act more like owners instead of just employees. The third, and most vital, essential is all about taking care of your customers.

The narrative alone would offer enough practical wisdom and insight, but the One Minute Entrepreneur also includes thirteen “one minute insights” pages throughout the book. They each offer a bullet list of key ideas about how to think and act to succeed in business. These pages are easy to find, so you can quickly refer back to the essential ideas to keep them on your mind.
