"Robert Lustig's 90-minute YouTube video "Sugar: The Bitter Truth", has been viewed more than two million times. Now, in this much anticipated book, he documents the science and the politics that has led to the pandemic of chronic disease over the last 30 years. In the late 1970s when the government mandated we get the fat out of our food, the food industry responded by pouring more sugar in. The result has been a perfect storm, disastrously altering our biochemistry and driving our eating habits out ofour control. To help us lose weight and recover our health, Lustig presents personal strategies to readjust the key hormones that regulate hunger, reward, and stress; and societal strategies to improve the health of the next generation. Compelling, controversial, and completely based in science, Fat Chance debunks the widely held notion to prove "a calorie is NOT a calorie", and takes that science to its logical conclusion to improve health worldwide"-- Provided by publisher.

Unfortunately, poorly written, so difficult to work through.
Facts seem backed up scientifically, but not easy to glean useful information to apply to one's lifestyle.
Cannot recommend.

An amazing book, based exclusively on science, facts, research and many years of real life experience of the author.

Definitely a must read by everyone (obese or not) who follows a "standard" western world diet thinking they eat and drink healthy.

And above all, Kudos for Prof. Lustig, for his determination and guts to go against the establishment in such a brave way. The world would be a much better place with more people like him!

Very informative, great facts, easy recommendations and guidelines to follow (if you want).

I would very much recommend to read this book, also for slim people!

It's refreshing to read something that is well thought out, makes sense, truthful and expressed by someone who actually is a professional who dares to say it like it is. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know where he's going with this. We've been lied to and have not had the total truth from the medical establishment and most G.P's/specialists skirt the issue because they don't even have their bio-chemistry degree to understand how to get to the cause of issues. We pretty much have bar doctors these days. As Dr. Lustig indicates, we must get to the cause of these issues so people can be truly helped. The system should assist people financially and medically via preventative as well but it seems we're always fighting the pharmaceuticals along with public high end investment companies that the average person can't even take part in. We'd probably be rich if we could but it's only for the rich to invest in leaving us to too many old archaic procedures that should have been outlawed long ago. If the universe only put food for our bodies in the ground, on the trees, in the oceans etc., it's time to detox, as hard as it is, and get the fuel into our bodies so we can start to be smart again and cease and desist tolerating toxic food of any kind. Just don't buy it and see how long they last - we do have the control if we'd only use it. Eat real food from small local owned companies that care about you, animals & our health & put our dollars back into our own province and country-it just makes sense! Live long and prosper.

Very thorough medical analysis of nutrition on the entire body. Not easy reading due to the extreme detail.

Bottom line:
1. Stop all sugars,
2. Get much natural fiber,
3. Exercise a lot.

I'm having a hard time reading this. The You Tube video was good, but this is putting me to sleep! I agree with the premise, that sugar is addictive and a poison. I also love his line (on YouTube) about fiber and "fat or fart." I'll keep trying to get through it.

In "Fat Chance," paediatrician Robert Lustig blatantly blames sugar for the obesity pandemic. In fact, he describes sugar literally as a poison, one which wrecks havoc on hormone balance and insulin regulation thereby causing diabetes, polycystic ovaries, gout and a host of other illnesses.

Digging deeper, he explains that heredity may cause insulin resistance yet there are also evolutionary reasons why humans have a propensity to develop such resistance. For instance, in pregnancy or puberty, weight gain proves beneficial so a mechanism that keeps us feeling hungry can be useful. But, this mechanism malfunctions in modern, sugar-rich societies as high insulin levels increase fat storage while short-circuiting the brain into craving more food.

Does this make sugar a poison? Certainly, sugar-rich diets increase the amount of fat stored around the liver thereby damaging organs, interfering with brain signals, and promoting damaging, addictive behaviour. While Lustig's arguments often seem to go overboard, blindly lambasting a single molecule (fructose) for the world's gamut of health problems, he does offer ways to improve our health. He advises a high-fibre diet to move "stuff" through our systems without overloading our liver and more exercise as an effective way to control hormone levels.

Lustig now has a new regulatory climate as his chief aim and has taken a sabbatical to study public health law. Based on his smart, well-researched and lucid book, not to mention his YouTube lecture that has three million hits, he is likely to be a formidable advocate.
