A difficult read at the beginning. Once you get past 1/3 of the book and into the meat of the conflict, the action comes alive. The reader is then welcomed into the story.
This is a fun tale about a band of misfits (2 teenage girls, 1 teenage boy, an escaped senior citizen from an old folks’ home, and a home care worker) who want to live like pirates. They leave their lives to become pirates on the open sea. The open sea happens to be the Bay, but, at least they try.
This is such a simple, uncomplicated narrative that this book can be read in one sitting. Some authors include and fabricate so much subplot and unnecessary action into a tight story. Daniel Handler has mastered the art of creating fast-paced and exciting adventures for all children (and adults) to enjoy.

Although this book appeared to be well received, it did not engage my interest and I did not finish it.
