Jennifer Kroot's documentary about the creator of Tales of the city moves nimbly between playful and poignant and laugh-out-loud funny. Maupin offers a disarmingly frank look at the journey that took him from the jungles of Vietnam to the bathhouses of '70's San Francisco to the front line of the American culture war.

I have read and enjoyed all of Amistead Maupin's novels. It was very enjoyable to know more about his history. Kristi & Abby Tabby

I never knew this writer's work but I loved the interviews! People interviewing him kept trying to put him in a box and proved that he won't be put in one. Excellent!

A friend recommended this movie after seeing it, and surmising that I had lived in San Francisco when Tales of the City appeared daily in the San Francisco Chronicle. That was my introduction to Armistead Maupin. This is a wonderful documentary. If you ever wondered how a person became who they are, this is a great example of how things might not turn out how one might expect. Interesting to know that as a young man, Maupin worked for Jesse Helms, and knew Richard Nixon! More interesting are his friendships with Rock Hudson and Ian McKellen. The tidbit about Margaret Cho's parents owning a bookstore on Polk Street is an interesting aside. There is much candor in this movie. Isn't that how it should be?

Yes, I enjoyed Maupin's Tales of the City, but even more you should ask Maupin about Fake News - - as one of Nixon's dirty tricks writers, before he went straight [in journalism, that is and one hopes], Maupin knows Fake News from waaaaay back, although the beginning even predates him. [For that you'd need to ask Dan Rather, Jim Lehrer, Tom Braden, Pat Buchanan, the O'Leary boys and a host of others.]
