The Mothers meets An American Marriage in this dazzling debut novel about mothers and daughters, identity and family, and how the relationships that sustain you can also be the ones that consume you. The Butler family has had their share of trials, as sisters Althea, Viola, and Lillian can attest, but nothing prepared them for the literal trial that will upend their lives. Althea, the eldest sister and substitute matriarch, is a force to be reckoned with and her younger sisters have alternately appreciated and chafed at her strong will. They are as stunned as the rest of the small community when she and her husband Proctor are arrested, and in a heartbeat the family goes from one of the most respected in town to utter disgrace. The worst part is, not even her sisters are sure exactly what happened. As Althea awaits her fate, Lillian and Viola must come together in the house they grew up in to care for their sister's teenage daughters. What unfolds is a stunning portrait of the heart and core of an American family in a story that is as page-turning as it is important.

I really enjoyed reading this book, which is a really interesting examination of how when someone is imprisoned, the whole family suffers the consequences. But I finished it 2 weeks ago, and almost forgot about it entirely....which....seems like a bad sign. I'm glad I read it, but it's not anything groundbreaking or particularly heartening.

If you enjoyed "An American Marriage" this book is for you. The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls focuses largely on the effects of incarceration on a family. Gray largely focuses on the importance of mental health, dealing with the past, and redemption. The characters jump off the page and have both a warmth and restraint within their voices. Absolutely worth the read. Beautifully and cleverly written.

It is a beautiful portrait of the beauty and ugliness, joy and sorrow, loss and victory of what is family. Beautifully told. I really felt like I knew these women. Very nice read.

This will appeal to fans of Celeste Ng's branch of close knit family drama with a mid-western setting. Told in alternating viewpoints, it is excellent as an audiobook, with a full cast of narrators.

This is a wonderful, emotionally exquisite book. The characters are so real that I feel I know these people. It's one of the best books I've read in a long time.
