I actually saw this film twice, but not intentionally. The second time I was staying with a friend and he had rented it so I sat through it, which was not easy. Visually, it looks great. This is what NYC looks like. But the plot is turgid and weighed down by dime-store eroticism. There might be a triumphant feminist message here; if so, I missed it. Disappointing coming from a director whose films include THE PIANO, PORTRAIT OF A LADY, HOLY SMOKE! and the tremendous BRIGHT STAR. I suppose even an auteur such as Jane Campion can fire off a dud.
