What a hoot! But not for the usual reasons (as noted by Reader Reviews on Amazon that gave it one star). Time sequences make no sense, cities seem to be described by a person who had never been there even to change planes, technologies…

Yes, it's long and implausible bits may vex the linear thinkers of the world. I loved the character of Boris, having a Ukrainian background. Tartt nailed his character and pattern of speech. I also loved the description of the antique…

A fast-paced book with lots of twists & turns! Lovely descriptions of Manhattan, Amsterdam & Las Vegas make this a very visual book.

I can't say I liked this book. She is good writer but I really didn't care for most people in this book and I felt like some of it was hoping for a movie contract. I would like to spend more time with some of the characters but not Theo.

This novel was not worth spending your time reading. The author was trying to be phychological about life and it tried to do too much so it falls on deaf ears. If you like reading about looser characters then this is the book for you. …

The book is too long, it is too boring with the messy plot. It can easily be cut at least by half without loosing anything. It started very promising but after around 200 pages it is started to get too wordy, the idea just slept away and…

I agree with many of the previous comments. In addition I would like to say that the narration on the audiobook is superb. I as pleased with the way the story ended and was glad I stuck with it even though I was bogged down in the middle…

Agree with many previous comments; page turner for the first half but drags through the morass of addiction and some of the relationship dialogues with his friend Boris do bog down. Nevertheless, the play between fate and free choice,…

Overwrought, overwritten and loaded with unbelievable characters, a choking overabundance of metaphors, similes and clichés and so, so many references – culinary references, architectural references, literary, musical, furniture, you name…

Loved the way the author told about the main character's life, it was very well written. Would recommend it to anyone.

Possibly the best book I've ever read. The prose is captivating and the characters are incredibly flawed and dysfunctional without ever feeling too unlikeable. It's a long novel, yes, but I didn't want it to ever end.

A great premise, but unsatisfactory on so many levels. Theo appears to drift through to adulthood. Boris is a catalyst but the author spent far too long getting the reader to understand the destructive force that he will be. I think the…

This is one of those books that should come with a warning label - the type you see on cigarette packages. So here it is. It does have a very enticing beginning which led me unfortunately, dragged by my own curiosity to read to the bitter…

This book started with great promise; I couldn't wait to continue reading , but the promise was not fulfilled. The author appears to have had a problem figuring out how to wrap it up. The ending is truly tiresome. Disappointing. I…

At first sad and page-turning, the novel eventually became for me a bit long and tedious. However, it ultimately developed through the myriad of emotions and life experiences of the main character and was thoughtfully well-written. I…

My original comment was deleted possibly because of containing spoiler though my quote dated Apr 13, 2014 remained, the day before the book was awarded the 2014 Pulitzer for fiction ... well deserved.

After a very compelling middle, the end fell flat. I really liked adolescent, self-destructive Theo and Boris, but adult Theo was kind of boring, to be honest. At the end, Theo's eleventh-hour epiphany felt hollow and un-earned.

I could not get through the first few chapters. I can't understand what all the fuss was about so I returned this book after only getting through a few pages.

This is a novel that is well written, however, at times too wordy. The characters are very well defined so that you actually can feel their joy and depths of depression. It was worth reading although sometimes it dragged down. After…

This is a fascinating coming of age novel.

This is a really well written book. It was depressing and hard to get through at times because (not giving anything away) it opens when the main character is in trouble and then goes back to his childhood and all the things that happened…
